the architect & the painter.

Having just visited the home of Ray and Charles Eames this past February, I was thrilled to hear about the documentary featuring their life and work.

Eames: The Architect & The Painter truly inspired me to add a little more play into my workflow. The directors interviewed friends, family, and colleagues from the Eames office. It definitely wasn't the fluffy love story interlaced with their successes — as I expected — but rather a true story, complete with greed and failures in work and affairs outside the home/office. However, the real story was still magical and I feel like Ray finally got the credit she deserved.

I'd consider it a must-see. It's playing in Chicago until the 12th, so get out there!

Typeface!

I had the opportunity to see Typeface at the Gene Siskel Film Center last night.
I'm now planning a trip to visit the Hamilton Wood Type Museum for a weekend workshop of type setting!

Operated by volunteers of the Two Rivers Historical Society, the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum is the only museum dedicated to the preservation, study, production and printing of wood type. With 1.5 million pieces of wood type and more than 1,000 styles and sizes of patterns, Hamilton's collection is one of the premier wood type collections in the world.

Apparently you don't have to be a design nerd to appreciate wood type — I recently discovered my mom has a small collection (that I pretty much intend to borrow forever).
